Girls on Film is a feminist film collective that wants to give a bigger platform to cinema by and about women. Monthly, the screen curated films in De Cinema, placing female experiences central. These screenings are always linked to relevant guest speakers, who will also contribute to the podcast episodes. Since 2025, Girls on Film is not only supported by De Cinema, but also by the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF) and the Flemish Government.

About Girls on Film: the podcast

Girls on Film proudly introduces: the podcast, a parallel running podcast series, available online, to give more background information about the films and guest speakesr to (film) fans. Preceding the film screenings, a short introduction will be given in conversation with the guest speaker but in these podcasts, we’ll take our time to offer extra background information about the film, the themes and the personal connection with the subject.

The podcast is free to listen to and episodes are released within the week after every Girls on Film screening on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and this page. Everyone is invited to dive deeper in the world of film and the voices that shape these stories!

In March we screen MEISJE, a coming of age story about identity, letting go and the complex connection between mothers and daughters. The shy twenty-something Muriel (Charlotte Vanden Eynde) still lives in her birth town, where she lives a predictable life and works in the factory side-by-side with her nearly sixty-year-old mother. When the urge for change becomes too great, she moves to the city. There, she rents a room with Laura (Els Dottermans), a young woman who struggles herself with the her desire for security and a family. What starts as a jump towards independence, soon confronts Muriel with the restrictions of her protective upbringing and her own insecurity. The screeening will be introduced by Dorothée Van den Berghe and Girls on Film.
