Film is never just images. From iconic soundtracks and innovative sound design to live musical accompaniment, MUSIC explores how sound and music shape the rhythm, meaning and emotional impact of film – whether in brand-new films and restored classics, or in music documentaries and musicals.

Within this strand we also present RE/SCORED, a series in which contemporary musicians create and perform a new live soundtrack to films, in collaboration with De Studio.

HIGHLIGHTS

A brand-new silent film with a live-performed soundtrack: SATAN JAWA by Garin Nugroho is an Indonesian tragedy about poverty, love, and black magic, filmed in stark black-and-white. Not a retro experiment, but a radical reinterpretation of silent cinema as a contemporary art form. This is a unique opportunity to experience this internationally presented work in Antwerp. The screening will be live accompanied by musicians Peni Candra Rini, Andy McGraw and Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė.

LOUDER THAN YOU THINK is a cinematic stroll through the turbulent life of this highly maladjusted drummer, who constantly pushed the boundaries of the lo-fi sound. Gary Young’s drug-and-alcohol-fueled antics—from onstage handstands to handing out random vegetables to bewildered fans—were both the driving force behind the band’s rise and the catalyst for its eventual crash. The film reveals how his haphazard production methods accidentally helped define a generation, all while he teetered on the fine line between pure self-expression and total self-destruction.

In the sweltering Jamaica of 1977, drummer Leeroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace is just trying to get by. Life in the ghettos of Kingston drifts along in a haze of heat and lingering boredom, until he decides to take charge of his own fate. ROCKERS is more than a movie; it is a pulsing time capsule. The line between fiction and reality blurs as icons like Burning Spear and Peter Tosh simply play themselves in their own homes and streets.
