About
Mission
De Cinema is the place in Antwerp where film is celebrated in all its splendour and diversity. As the film museum section of the Museum of Contemporary Art (M HKA) and housed in the vibrant De Studio, De Cinema is a dynamic and inclusive meeting place for cinephiles, young filmmakers, and diverse audiences. With an extensive film archive, two venues, and the best projection equipment—both analogue (35mm) and digital (4K)—we bring you a mix of timeless classics, groundbreaking new films, and hidden gems from film history from around the world—from old voices to new perspectives, and from activist cinema to experimental art films.
Vision
Our mission is clear: to celebrate film in all its forms and colors. De Cinema therefore offers, often in collaboration with various partners, a screen for (new) filmmakers and a home for quality films and artistic freedom, with a curated programme that is as diverse as the city in which we are located. Our goal is not only to screen films, but also to connect and engage in dialogue between people, cultures, and generations.
With its renewed DNA, De Cinema remains a unique place for varied film experiences, combined with lectures and panel discussions, live film concerts, yoga, or parties: there is always something to discover at De Cinema.
Reading table
In the foyer (on the second floor) of De Cinema, you can browse and read the latest film magazines at our reading table: Cinéaste, Première, Cahiers du Cinéma, Positif, American Cinematographer, Filmbulletin…

M HKA
The Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, or M HKA for short, stands as a premier institution in the realm of contemporary fine art and visual culture. Deeply rooted in the Antwerp avant-garde, with a strong international connection. The M HKA broadens your view. With large-scale exhibitions and intimate presentations, from established artists and up-and-coming talent. Experience film, performance and artist talks. Attend creative workshops and partake in custom-tailored tours.
The collection includes regional and international contemporary art from the 1960s avant-garde to the present. Showcasing prominent works by key artists such as Gordon-Matta Clark, Panamarenko, and Otobong Nkanga. Alongside premier ensembles from various corners of the globe. The M HKA focuses on Eurasia, considering it as a multipolar space with a diverse array of cultures, encompassing both Europe and Asia.
De Studio
De Studio is a cultural hotspot located at Mechelseplein, in the heart of Antwerp. It connects young people (aged 0 to 30) with art, culture, and media, with a strong focus on the urban and social context, and with care for the vulnerable position of young people and new artists.
The building is a natural biotope for children and young people, families and hipsters alike. Organised in such a way, De Studio can transform from a theater into a party club, an art gallery, or a conference space. De Studio is a place where families, schools, teenagers, twenty-somethings, party crashers, worriers, critics, those lost and found feel at home. An open house that gives young people space to tell their stories, and hosts super-diverse theater companies, creators, performers, curators, and artists to turn their dreams into extraordinary deeds.
