Everyone is welcome at our MATINEES on Thursday and Sunday afternoon, which we spend in the great company of the biggest stars and the most memorable cinema of yore.

The MATINEES take you on a nostalgic journey to the cinematic past. From the Golden Hollywood years full of spectacle films and musicals, and the most important European film movements (such as the Nouvelle Vague, film noir and neorealism) to retrospectives on celebrated directors and actors. We screen movies people were standing in line for over 70 years ago and show cinema as it is no longer being made and is seldom screened: on the big screen, on 35mm and with a cosy cup of coffee, tea and biscuits.

On Tuesday afternoon, we screen a contemporary film!

FOCUS

During De Cinema’s focus programme SPOTLIGHT ON WOMXN DIRECTORS, activist film (archive) collective Invisible Women curates our matinee programming. Invisible Women brings women filmmakers and filmmakers in the margin of oblivion with screenings, events and articles. Their traveling programme STRONGER THAN LOVE: ¡TOO MUCH MEXICAN MELODRAMA! (March – April 2026) selects visually stunning and emotionally explosive films from Mexico’s Golden Age (1930s-1950s). The programme includes everything we know about melodrama – the impeccable esthetic and turbulent passions, impossible loves, and dramatic love triangles – but this time not America but Mexico forms the backdrop.
