The BREEDBEELD Short Film Festival is an initiative of BREEDBEELD. BREEDBEELD is a support center for everyone in Flanders who is not (yet) professionally involved in film, photography or media art. We support, inform, inspire and connect image makers through festivals like this, but also through workshops within the BREEDBEELD film school, through exhibitions, publications and online content.

A warm welcome to the BREEDBEELD short film festival – for now still on the website, soon hopefully in the plush seats of De Cinema. This year the BREEDBEELD short film festival reaches its 14th edition. At our festival you can see more than 70 short films , from fiction, animation and documentary to experimental film. The focus is on Belgian short films by emerging talent. All the films in the competition have been made largely with the filmmakers’ own resources, without VAF funding or a wildcard budget. In this way, we aim to present a diverse programme featuring a range of creators and voices, from promising film students to independent filmmakers and (as yet) non-professional artists. The short films in our competition section can win prizes in several categories. The winners each receive €1,000 in prize money, as a boost for a future project. After each competition block, we have a short conversation with the filmmakers present.

Besides watching films, we also want to inspire you during the festival to start a next project of your own. For example, you can come and listen to seven filmmakers pitching their script for the first time, followed by a networking drink. This year we’re also once again screening a few short films made with the project grant from BREEDBEELD and the Flemish Government.

For the third time, we’re showing a Super 8 programme. We gave twelve filmmakers an empty analogue film roll and set them off to shoot an 8mm film shot by shot. They perform the soundtrack live or made it afterwards based on notes taken while filming. You can watch the result together with them for the first time at our Super 8 premieres on Saturday.

Finally, BREEDBEELD is certainly not the only organisation that wants to get you excited about short film. That’s why we invite four other organisations to fill a short film block from their own perspective. The curators of these guest programmes are yanco, the Brussels Short Film Festival, That Natural Thing with Cinema Soleil, and a short film programme focusing on dance shorts by Brecht Van Vliet and Astrid De Haes.

Enjoy the films!
