THIRD EDITION SPOTLIGHT ON WOMXN DIRECTORS

For one month from 8 March (Internationl Women’s Day), De Cinema presents for the third year in a row SPOTLIGHT ON WOMXN DIRECTORS: one month of exclusively works of female and non-binary makers. No symbolic gesture, but a clear positioning: with a sharply curated selection – across genres, continents and periods – we question the dominance of white, male voices and make space for alternate perspectives, shapes and histories in the canon.

SPOTLIGHT starts from one conviction: film history is not a fixed story but is constantly being rewritten. This edition is an ode to debutants and pioneers who broke down the film language and production contexts, but which are too often gone missing from history.

Like Kristen Stewart stated in the light of her directorial debut THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER: “There’s this bullshit fallacy that you need to have experience … It’s a real male perspective.” Experience is still used selectively as a hurdle. We show the opposite: innovation often begins with those who did not get the spotlight yet.

So let’s make & take some space together.
