Breedbeeld – Cinema Soleil

Various directors 90 min

By That Natural Thing

Cinema Soleil focuses on Afro perspectives and stories, presenting a carefully curated selection of short films and concerts. The evening offers a stage to films that rarely get the spotlight in the traditional film circuit, but that excel in expressive power, emotion and visual imagination. The programme makes room for voices that move, challenge and connect.

Alongside the screenings, the filmmakers talk with the audience. Themes such as identity, creating within a diaspora context, personal narratives and the power of storytelling are at the heart of this open conversation. The evening invites encounter, dialogue and inspiration.

DEAR SARA (2024, Sara Boumkwo, 9′)
In ‘Dear Sara’, Sara Boumkwo looks back on her childhood dream of becoming a princess and turns this personal memory into a powerful exploration of beauty standards and representation. Through a performative intervention in Brussels’ Matongé district, a hub of African beauty culture, she steps forward as her own version of royal grandeur. The video work weaves together themes such as childhood dreams, Western beauty ideals and self-discovery, while examining the outside gaze directed at women of colour.

BLESS MY LITTLE EYES (2026, Francis Kojo Jr, 7′)
A black-market seer, who can witness the final moments of the dead by replacing his own eyes with theirs, is hired to investigate the murder of a young woman. He receives a vision that may well be the last thing he ever gets to see.

WHEN THE SUN HIT THE PETALS (2026, Goldiie, 9′)
A young woman wakes up, suspended between dream and reality, emotionally adrift and searching for release. Guided by a circle of women, she undergoes intimate rituals of cleansing, touch, fabric and flowers. Through silence, movement and collective care, the film explores healing, repetition, sisterhood and the sacred softness of Black womanhood.

NYAME MMA (2024, Joewackle J. Kusi, 27′)
After the sudden death of his father, a young man returns home for the funeral and to say goodbye, while his father embarks on a magical journey to the afterlife.
