Grave robbery, torture, possessed nuns and a satanic Sabbath: the legendary HÄXAN by Benjamin Christensen uses a series of dramatic narratives to research the scientific hypothesis that witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as the psychiatric patients at the beginning of the twentieth century. But the film is far from serious; it’s rather a witches’ brew of the scary, disgusting and darkly humorous.
