In SPACE IS THE PLACE, avant-garde jazz pioneer Sun Ra, dressed as a futuristic pharaoh, travels through time and space in his music-powered spaceship. On Earth, he convinces the African-American community to break free from earthly shackles and relocate to a utopian planet, while battling The Overseer, a satanic godfather disguised as a pimp.

Between absurd science fiction and documentary footage of a live Sun Ra concert, the film addresses serious themes: black identity, oppression, and the liberating power of music. Since its release in 1974, SPACE IS THE PLACE is considered as the beginning of Afrofuturism and has become a cult classic.

This film screening is part of the brand new PULSE MUSIC FILM FESTIVAL (22-25 January).
