Steve Reich: A New Musical Language
Tonal patterns, hypnotic repetitions, and an irresistibly captivating rhythm: in the 1980s, Steve Reich emerged as one of the most innovative forces in music. It’s hard to believe that his radical experiments once nearly led to riots. This film, made in honor of his fiftieth birthday, takes you through two decades of groundbreaking work: from his early tape pieces to monumental orchestral compositions, with sparkling concert recordings from England and New York. Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, flutist Ransom Wilson, and Reich’s own ensemble bring his music to life, while conductor Michael Tilson Thomas—one of his most important allies—shows how Reich forever changed the musical language.
This film screening is part of the brand new PULSE MUSIC FILM FESTIVAL (22-25 January).
