It Was Just an Accident
Nominated for 2 Oscars: Best International Feature and Original Screenplay.
IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is the new film by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The film won the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and, like Panahi’s previous films, was made without the consent of the Iranian regime. IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is a thriller that combines revenge, humor, and humanity.
Yahid (Vahid Mobasseri) is working in the garage one quiet evening when a customer comes in, having problems with his car after a minor accident. Vahid is startled when he thinks he recognizes Eghbal, the officer who tortured him in prison. He senses revenge, but at the same time, he begins to doubt. Together with several others in the same situation, he desperately tries to uncover the truth. This leads them into situations ranging from perilous to comical, but how can they be sure they have the right man?
Director Jafar Panahi was himself sentenced to six years in prison and banned from working. He drew on his own experiences for IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT.
