Mélodie en sous-sol
MÉLODIE EN SOUS-SOL connects two generations of French film stars in a classic heist movie from the heyday of French cinema. Jean Gabin plays Charles, a criminal who, after years in prison, is determined to pull off one last big heist. In Cannes, he sets his sights on the Palm Beach Casino and enlists the help of young Francis, played by Alain Delon, a former cellmate with an arrogant attitude, striking cheekbones, and an unpredictable temperament.
The film follows the preparations for the robbery step by step. Verneuil does not focus on violence or action, but on precision, timing, and the relationship between the two men. The tension arises from the contrast between the calm, experienced Charles and the overconfident Francis. Their scenes together form the film’s centerpiece, in which glances and small gestures say more than dialogue.
MÉLODIE EN SOUS-SOL was co-written by Michel Audiard (father of filmmaker Jacques) and edited by Françoise Bonnot, Verneuil’s wife, who would later win an Oscar for Z.
This film is part of Lucky Chance (27 Feb-1 Mar): a three-day film festival about humankind’s desire for gambling.
