Shiva Baby
During the shiva (a Jewish mourning tradition), young Danielle (Rachel Sennott) unexpectedly comes face to face with her sugar daddy, his wife, and an ex-girlfriend. Unfortunately for Danielle’s frayed nerves, that’s not the end of it. Questions about her future plans, an impending confrontation with an old fling, and uncertainty about who exactly has died are just the beginning of what awaits her during this unfortunate afternoon.
SHIVA BABY is Emma Seligman’s impressive feature film debut and promises an hour and a half of pure social horror: sweat, forced smiles, and the unbearable silence of a family gathering where everything goes wrong at once. A brilliant, biting comedy about identity, expectations, and the chaos of young adulthood—like Woody Allen on espresso, but more feminist, queer, and much more uncomfortable.
Or as one Letterboxd review put it: “UNCUT GEMS for hot girls who think considering law school is a personality trait.”
