Sicilian mine worker Carmelo ‘Mimi’ Mardocheo votes for the Communist Party, instead of the Mob backed Party, in what he thought was an anonymous election. It costs him his job and he can’t find another one in his town, because it is controlled by the Mafia. Mimi leaves his wife and travels to Turin, where he finds an illegal job and courts the beautiful Fiore. However, the mob continues to follow him and they lure him back to Sicily with a better job. Now Mimi has to keep his lover – and love child – a secret.

With her recognisable mixture of outspoken humour, eroticism and harsh unveiled criticism of the Italian society, filmmaker Lina Wertmüller established herself as one of the most interesting voices of the cinema of the 70s. Even though she was the first woman to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Director, she doesn’t consider herself to be a feminist icon. “I consider myself a director, not a female director. I think there’s no difference. The difference is between good movies and bad movies.”
