Open Air
For the second year in a row, De Cinema heads outdoors this summer with a series of open-air screenings.
CINEMA URBANA
For the second edition of Classic Tuesdays at Cinema Urbana during the ‘Zomer van Antwerpen’, De Cinema presents four film classics that put freedom, longing and uniqueness to the test.
In SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959), Billy Wilder has two musicians, on the run for the mafia, go into hiding in an all-female band. A fast-paced comedy that playfully undermines gender norms, with a legendary closing line and the as always radiant leading lady Marilyn Monroe, who would have turned 100 this year.
In Emile Ardolino’s DIRTY DANCING (1987), Baby asserts her body against class and convention. “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” became a cultural turning point and a lasting symbol of emancipation.
Wong Kar-wai’s IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000) slows down until every glance could cut like a knife. Two neighbors circle around each other, torn between loyalty and desire, in a film that has become a landmark in cinema for its exploration of time, memory, and loss.
In PERSEPOLIS (2007) Marjane Satrapi tells the autobiographical story of a young girl growing up during and after the Iranian revolution. Through powerful black-and-white animation, the film explores how identity is shaped by the pressures of migration and repression, in a story that remains deeply relevant today.
DE GENOMEN BENEN
Together with FC Dollyshot, we present DE GENOMEN BENEN (THE GREAT ESCAPE) at De Nor, the free space of Dennis Tyfus in Middelheim Park; one Wednesday evening in June, July, and August. In THE TRIAL, Orson Welles portrays a world without logic: a trial without charges, a system that keeps turning. LE TROU by Jacques Becker follows five men and one plan—no heroics, just precision. In UN CONDAMNÉ À MORT S’EST ÉCHAPPÉ, Robert Bresson reduces escape to pure discipline. A triptych that approaches imprisonment as a system, a mental state, and a struggle for escape.
BOSCINEMA
In addition, this summer we launch within BOSCINEMA, our new collaboration with Het Bos, unique screenings in Antwerp’s most cosy courtyard—also known as the BOSgarden.
